 Post subject: AC3 OSS Help?

Hi,
I'm using Linhes, and am having a difficult time trying to get AC3 to play properly. I do have sound coming out of the spdif, but cannot get AC3 to work.

I've updated OSS to 4.2, and even updated ALSA, before giving up on it. ALSA would not detect the card. The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H, using a Realtek ALC889A chip.

I briefly tried mythdora and mythbuntu, and did get AC3 playing, but vdpau was lacking, and I've been with knoppmyth for many years so I'd like to stay with it.

Is this a mplayer config problem? I'm pretty darn confused.

OSS doesn't like Firefox with Hulu, (no sound) but ALSA didn't work at all for anything....

Any help is much appreciated.

Yes, this is merely a "me too" posting.

ALSA does not recognize my card at all (when selecting "ALSA" from the menu). OSS does & o/ps over SPDIF but I get no AC3, DTS etc :-(( Really miss this..

Oddly, ALSA under R5F27 recognized the card just fine. Any ALSA tips greatly appreciated, I really don't know anything about this sound stuff.

It's good to see someone else has this problem, and its not just mine and mine only :)

Seems like high quality audio is on the backburner, i dunno.

I did a fresh reinstall and will continue to fiddle with ALSA and/or OSS to get AC3 and DTS passthrough to work properly.

aplay gives results? Good for you, you're further than me.

I tried disabling onboard audio, but *since* it is onboard audio, it didn't work -as I thought.

Again, after the reinstall, ALSA is useless. OSS seems to work like my original post.

Some times it is just easier to buy a compatible card. They are very inexpensive and will probably save you some grief. BTW, what card are you struggling with?

However, if you prefer to be challenged, I would recommend first trying out the suggestions at Allen's digital how-to on the mythtv wiki:
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki?title=Allens ... AudioHowto and then if needed updating to the latest alsa (1.0.22.1).

I am reciting the following from memory so please treat it with caution. I'm traveling the next few days but I will verify it when I can.

For the latest alsa, you can get the basics (alsa-lib and alsa-util) from the "normal" arch repo. Look in /etc/pacman.conf and temporarily uncomment the following:

You can see the available alsa with:

pacman -Syl | grep alsa

so then execute:

pacman -Sy "alsa-lib >= 1.0.22" "alsa-util >= 1.0.22"

If you see other alsa packages that are more up to date than yours then update those too but at the time of this writing those should be the only two.

Next you will need to obtain the drivers for 1.0.22.1 which will require a recompile. The recipe is roughly this: create and enter a temporary directory, install the base dev package; get the alsa source, configure, make, make install.

wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.22.1.tar.bz2
tar xvf alsa-driver-1.0.22.1.tar.bz2
cd alsa-driver
./configure
make
make install

Just saw your chipset above. You should go to the alsa source too and see if that chip is currently supported in the latest driver too. Alsa is at: http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page

I've experienced similar problems to yours in R5.5 and tweaking in alsamixer solved it. I believe it was one of the IECXXX settings.
