Hi all,

I have built a new BE, but when I try recording the system eventually locks up, and I have to reboot it.

It seems to start recording fine, but after a while I get an error with the drives. Then a lot of ivtv errors. At that point the fs becomes read-only, and soon after the entire system becomes unresponsive.

I have tried new drives, but have the same issue so I am pretty sure its not the drives. It could be the controller sil3124. If I just use the dd command to copy 50GB of random data to the drives they dont have this problem. Maybe an IRQ sharing issue?

Any help or even wild guess would be appreciated at this point.

I removed two drives from my storage group, and connected the remaining two directly to the motherboard onboard SATA controller. I didnt have any problems so my guess is its either the controller is bad, or there is an IRQ sharing problem with some other piece of hardware.

The motherboard has a 2nd IDE/Raid controller I can disable, and see if it helps.

I disabled some unused hardware, but I am still seeing some IRQ sharing. It happens to be with the two devices that start throwing all the errors.
Code:
 21:      21511          0   IO-APIC-fasteoi   ivtv2, sata_sil24

I went ahead, and disabled any additional hardware I could. Firewire, audio, com1, com2, paralel, unused ide controllers. I also disabled bus mastering just for the heck of it. I was unable to prevent the IRQ sharing so I pulled ivtv2 or video2 from the system. I already know if I pull out sata_sil24 the system works ok. So after pulling ivtv2 I have a dedicated IRQ to sata_sil24 now.

Code:
21:        145          0   IO-APIC-fasteoi   sata_sil24

The system still crashed though so I am back to square one again. I guess I will install Windows to try and see if its the driver or a hardware problem. At least if I have problems in Windows I can get the card replaced. Bleh.

I recently ran into an issue where a SMP capable driver nvidia was causing a lot of problems. Turned out to be due to Hyperthreading on the P4 CPU. I disabled Hyperthreading in the BIOS and was able to fix the video problems I was having so this might be due to the same issue.

I will swap SATA cards again maybe this weeked after having disabled Hyperthreading to see if it fixes the problem.

Must have had a reason to disable Hyperthreading in the kernel but its given me a headache for a while now.

Interesting. I have a sil3124 driving two eSata linked DASes. When I had only one DAS on it, I had no issue but now that I have 2 of them I get this behaviour. Basically initial transfers are fine but it eventually bogs down.

If I stop the transfers the system recovers. The funny thing is the transfers can go on for quite a while (say over a minute) before it begins to bog down.

I was planning to split the DASes across two individual sil3124s to see if it helped as I have a spare one. But I will be attentive to your results.

Because it doesn't bog down right away, I can still read movies and show from it with no issue. But backups are not practical.

BTW, I run the drivers in CentOS 4.7 (my host system) so it is not an Arch issue. It could also be a driver issue. I am using the one provided by Silicon Image.

yaplej,
What I/O controller is on your board? I have an 82801I (ICH7).

I put an extra sil3124 to drive the 2nd DAS and it made no difference. But when I run the file transfers full blast, I get USB transfer issues causing my hd-pvr's to hiccup. For now I've simply slowed the transfers down with an rsync paramater which makes a big difference.

I'm thinking it is either the I/O controller (it controls all PCIE, SATA, IRQ, and USB), or possibly a PCIE level parameter. I think IRQ sharing is a red herring as the interrupts should be vectored anyway.

I have an Intel 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R).

I tried to eliminate all IRQ sharing by disabling any unneeded onboard devices and still had issues. I had not tried any USB transfers with the Sil3124 installed.

When doing a copy with dd I seem to recall that I was able to copy several GB of data without getting the sata reset issue. At least not with the amount of data I was copying.

I am using PVR150 tuners so maybe its just a problem with the Sil3124 and some tuners.

Do you seem to only have this issue when the tuner is also in use?

No I don't think so but I am not using any PCI tuners. But come to think of it I do still have my Hauppauge PVR500 installed just not used. I have twin HD-PVRs. I think it is worth me pulling it out to see if it makes a difference. I would be surprised as it is on the PCI bus where the sil3124s are on the PCI-E bus. Hard to imagine a conflict.

My slow downs feel like a saturation of the i/o somewhere. It starts fine but once in about 3GB of say a 5GB file it begins to bog down.

At least we know we are dealing with a similar I/O architecture even if it is different generations.
