I must be going crazy, but I have been unable to boot from a SATA DVD drive. The drive is a LiteOn DH-20A3S, I have tried KnoppMyth 5.5/LinHES 6.00/6.02 CDs, and it has failed on a GigaByte GA-7VM400AM, an Asus M2NPV-VM, and an Asus M3N78-VM.

The BIOSes always detect the drive as ATAPI, but I am at a loss to work out why booting from it fails.

Any ideas?

That's odd behaviour. I put a SATA DVD drive into my mythbox using Linhes 6.01 and later 6.02.

Worked perfectly - no problems booting.

Is it a new drive? The fact it isn't working on several mobos would suggest its a problem with the drive. I'd use a range of different cables. Are there any other BIOS settings available for your motherboards?

Hang on - just thinking about the obvious - Have you selected SATA CD/DVD as the primary boot device? Possibly under 'Boot order' or similar.

HTH Chris

I finally worked it out - the LiteOn drive has flaky CD reading behaviour, and one or two of my motherboards have flaky SATA-CD/DVD boot behaviour.

I eventually got a combination that worked!

I'm glad you worked that out. The other option I have seen with SATA based optical drives is adjust the BIOS setting for the device to say "AHCI".
