i am using a dragon 2 system which i have been slowly upgrading over the years i have had it. i've added additional local storage, replaced the power supply and dvd burner, added memory, etc. nothing extreme. i like to keep things current, but not necessarily bleeding edge if there is no compelling reason. i am still using the original 6200 nvidia card, connected to my hd tv via dvi. not based on any data, but as the 6200 is fairly low down on the supported list, i am guessing that that vintage card will no longer be supported someday. does anyone have a suggestion for a more modern replacement video card, or can assuage my fears of card obsolescence? |

I still run nVidia 5200 cards and am happy. I wouldn't worry about the obsolecence issue - as long as it works and you are happy. The only thing you may want to consider is a nVidia card that supports VDPAU. That is a significant improvement. You can find a list of supported cards here |

Agreed. An 8800GS is the cheapest solution that will do VDPAU. I have one and it's great. |

That has the G86 GPU - same as the gen1 8400GS so I think you'll be happy. The G86 has: *VP2 *Complete acceleration for H.264 *Partial acceleration for MPEG-1, MPEG-2, VC-1/WMV9 It's lacking from the newer G98: *VP3 *Complete acceleration for MPEG-1, MPEG-2, VC-1/WMV9 and H.264. *All feature above for hardware decoding, but cannot decode H.264 for the following widths: 769-784, 849-864, 929-944, 1009-1024, 1793-1808, 1873-1888, 1953-1968, 2033-2048 pixels.
