I would like to upgrade my current LinHES box with newer hardward. I'm looking for a reasonably priced motherboard with at least 2 PCI slots, gigabyte Ethernet, hdmi, 4 usb, firewire, digital audio, and is currently running version 6.03? All suggestions appreciated. |

Easiest would be to look at Tier 1 hardware in the forum: Atomic Ant for example. Also, have a look at http://www.silentpcreview.com/ for quiet components, if you're interested in quiet running. After that, I would do this: Look in local shop's price list (in Melbourne, we call this "The Green Guide") and pick your CPU first. I'd probably go with something that's quite low in power consumption: Not because I'm tight, but because these are much easier to keep quiet. Only when you decide how quiet you(r wife) want(s) will you be able to pick a motherboard. I go for those with no northbridge fan, and check tomshardware.com. You may also want to Google what you want, and include the word "media" in your search. Before buying the motherboard, research its chipsets: Some may not be supported (yet) in Linux. All of the inbuilt stuff should be supported not only in linux, but in LinHES. Check the inbuilt graphics, if any: To make it easier, don't buy something with inbuilt graphics, instead buy an NVIDIA card with hdmi and that supports full VDPAU acceleration (e.g. GT240). It's a complex process selecting compatible components. You didn't say what you were replacing, or what you wanted, power-wise or noise-wise, so nobody will be able to give you a specific model. Mike P.S. You could also search for commercial operations that sell HTPCs and then check for Linux support. |
