I am researching \ seeking a reliable 2TB 3.5" drive to replace my 200GB mythtv drive. Suggestions are good / data is better.

Google has lots of drives so they published their reliability observations: http://static.googleusercontent.com/external_content/untrusted_dlcp/labs.google.com/en/us/papers/disk_failures.pdf

Conclusion:

Quote:
Our results confirm the findings of previous smaller
population studies that suggest that some of the SMART
parameters are well-correlated with higher failure probabilities.
We find, for example, that after their first scan
error, drives are 39 times more likely to fail within 60
days than drives with no such errors. First errors in reallocations,
offline reallocations, and probational counts
are also strongly correlated to higher failure probabilities.
Despite those strong correlations, we find that
failure prediction models based on SMART parameters
alone are likely to be severely limited in their prediction
accuracy, given that a large fraction of our failed drives
have shown no SMART error signals whatsoever. This
result suggests that SMART models are more useful in
predicting trends for large aggregate populations than for
individual components. It also suggests that powerful
predictive models need to make use of signals beyond
those provided by SMART.

It would seem that SMART false negatives are common, which means backing up your data \ movies.

I've no hard facts to back this up but I've been using samsung spin point disks in my myth box for years. I've been very impressed with them all right back from my 500gb f1 to my most recent 2Tb Samsung SpinPoint F4 EcoGreen one.

They seem to get good reviews last I looked.

Storage Reviews does reliability polls... It might be worth check there http://www.storagereview.com/

Possibly the storage section at Tom's Hardware as well... http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/Storage,5/

Good backup strategy is your best friend. Lowtech solution: purchase another 2 TB drive and mirror your current one via rsync. Unplug the power to this 2nd drive so it's not spinning 24/7 like the first. Manually power down, plug in, and backup again at a regular interval such as every week, every 2 weeks, whatever.
