Post subject:  Problems With Modern Hard Drives ?

I have a ton of ancient hard drives that have run forever with no issues.

In trying to keep up with the times, I've bought a number of TB drives and had them fail within a month to 4 months.. (2 Seagates & 1 Hitachi)

Is it the law of averages finally catching up with me, or are they making new product drives really poorly these days ? ....

I've had best success with hard drives since I began putting an extra fan on the drive mounting cage. I put a 12V fan and run it from 5V to provide a little cooling breeze for my hard drives. I arrange the fan to blow from the front of the computer to the back, so it flows the air across the motherboard and processor before exiting the box. Everything inside seems happier.

Before I began doing this I could count on an average of 1 failure/yr., sometimes more. Since, I've yet to experience a drive failure -- I have a raid of five 1T Samsung drives going on 2-3 years now.

A lot of the first and second gen Tb drives had crappy reliability numbers. For WD green drives part of the problem was their overly aggressive head park and sleep settings, but from reading a lot of HD reviews and user ratings, none of them were all that great.
