I had the motherboard in my FE/BE die on my today and I have replaced it however the system will now not boot. When I boot the system without the splash screen it drops to ramfs and I get the error:
Code:
Attempting to create root device '/dev/disk/by-uuid/UUID'(actual drive UUID)
ERROR: Failed to parse block device name for '/dev/disk/by-uuid/UUID'
unknown
ERROR: roots fs cannot be detected. Try using the rootfstype= kernel paramater.
Waiting for devices to settle...done.

It then goes on to try and create the device that is missing but then fails and drops me to ramfs$

I know that the easy solution would have been to do a backup on the old system and then just do an upgrade, however this is not a option as whilst all the hardware is the same, the Motherboard is not. The old motherboard is dead.

Looking at the modules that load in the kernel, they are:
Code:
pata_acpi
libata
scsi_mod

The problem I have identified is that the kernel does not have the required driver to mount the boot drive. The boot drive is an IDE and I have two data drives that are SATA, I have tried turning off the SATA in the BIOS however this has no effect.

I know I need to have the correct driver built into the kernel, however I have no idea how to identify the correct module and then no clue as to how to get it into the kernel.

One thought is to put a temp Hard drive into the system and load a clean install of LnHES 6.04 (current version I am using) and then copy across the initrd.img.

Nothing to lose I will give that a go, any other suggestions please feel free to comment.

Thanks

I can attest that my evil plan worked, what I did was using another drive install 6.04 and then once installed I used a Knoppix CD and a USB drive and copied off the file /boot/kernel26.img. I then copied that file back onto my original drive, after renaming it and then I editted grub boot option to point to the new file and the system booted. I was then able to do a backup and an upgarde to 6.04.

The upgrade, whilst it worked, the hardware did not work as such, so I then did an upgrade to 7.2 and the system is back up and running again, with one slight hitch which I will start a new thread on.
