I had a problem with my motherboard so I had to change it. The new board is a ASRock z77 extreme 4. It has on-board sound that is not supported by alsa 1.0.24 that is currently installed on my (heavily modified) LinHES 7.4 installation. I found that LinHES 8.0 alpha (20130211) has alsa 1.0.25 and correctly detects and supports the sound chip. Can anyone supply a strategy to upgrade my 7.4 installation to 1.0.25? I want to get my spdif passthrough working. I would rather avoid going to 8.0 which is apha and does not detect my Ceton TV card.

Though I am a long time linux user, I have not had to dabble with the sound sub-system for at *least* a decade since it always 'just worked' for me. That makes it a bit of a mystery area for me.

Please take a look at this post

It would be great to help out the devs getting the Centon Card working

I saw that thread. The link to the iso is dead. Not really the topic of this thread.

Did you also Try OSS? I'm finding online that some people have initially had issues with this board and audio with linux, but once they selected the correct output device it all worked. You said that LinHES 8 worked for audio but is not an option have you tried running a new (live) version of 7.4 to see if there is some random something in your "heavily modified 7.4" that may be tripping you up?

Thanks. That worked. The trick is to use the package for 3.0 kernels even though LinHES is using 2.6.39. The package for 2.6 won't compile since it calls some include file that was pruned late in the 2.6 tree.

Your info is pretty lean so turning up the inference dial I am guessing you are trying to use pacman to install packages you have DLed. Are you using the correct option to pacman install option to install local rather than repository packages? I believe it is 'pacman -U path/packagename'.
