Bought one of these in hopes of making it a Front End.

When trying to install via USB CD-ROM, LIHNES 8.1, I get an error of I8042 no controller found.
This is using theLegacy (USB) install not the UEFI the installation screen will appear.
chosing the default install:

I8042 no controller found will appear in the beginning installation.

After a point the monitor will blank out.
I still hear the CD still spinning and such but with no visual I can't determine what to do next.

Other times will get a Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt.

Trying the other choices in the menu results the same.

When trying the UEFI I will get a kernal panic, as well.

Hoping I'm not too early in purchasing this, otherwise we have a good test box until this is figured out.

Don't know if this will help, but for my pentium based frontend, I had to use the LinHES menu option of Boot with force vesa (special hardware option->force vesa) and add nomodeset to the command line.)

This helped me get that box loaded.

I did also have to set the disk as bootable manually since the bios appeared to be blocking linux from setting it.

HTH.

It's a bug in the linux kernel that has to do with not having a ps2 keyboard and mouse. It's supposed to be fixed in Kernel 3.13. I'm pretty sure the R8.2 is based on that Kernel so as soon a R8.2 rolls out you can give that a try....

OK, I was able to install 8.2 successfully and it found everything including the built in remote receiver.

The only issue is the Video.

Seeing small examples of Video decoding problems
For example with the intro of Big Bang Theory, the Sun or some planet flying by is not circular it is seeing being sliced.
The system is set to up the VA API from the Myth settings - Video - Player

From vainfo:
VA-API version 0.32.1
va_getDriverName() returns 0
Trying to open /usr/lib/fir/i965_drv_video.s0
va_opneDriver() returns -1
VaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error), exit

Intel is reporting the video is HD graphics 4400.
Any input will be appreciated.
I tried to upgrade the VA-API but it is reporting being at the most current version.

Also, I noticed there is no xorg.conf file in the system, do I need one in order for the OS to recognize the GPU?

I did not get an output with LSCPI
I ran LSPCI but there was no Intel mentioned at all
only VGA mentioned.

ran
cat /var/log/dmesg |grep -i Intel
or
cat /var/log/dmesg |grep -i i9
and find I915 in the logs.

Different flavors of linux are updating at different times. From what i can tell on the newer kernels it detects as intel 965, older ones 915 (not so good performance). This might give you a bit more insight. It should perform better with a newer kernel than the one in R8.2.

Thanks to everyone involved with 8.3
I'm still using this NUC for front end.
The only thing missing is getting VAAPI working.
Running vainfo
it's reporting
Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/i965_drv_video.so
Which doesn't exist from searching the
From my finding at the moment I need to instal:
libva-intel-driver

When running pacman -Q libva*
the libva-intel-driver is not listed.
Can it be pulled from another repository or in the end will it break everything?
If so which repository and is a certain level of driver to use?

Thanks
