Soooo - I've been going through upgrading and have bumped into the nVidia driver issue that comes along with running 8.4.

/var/log/Xorg.0.log
Code:
[   547.956] (WW) NVIDIA(0): The NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 GPU installed in this system is
[   547.956] (WW) NVIDIA(0):     supported through the NVIDIA 173.14.xx Legacy drivers.
[   547.956] (WW) NVIDIA(0):     Please visit http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html for
[   547.956] (WW) NVIDIA(0):     more information.  The 364.19 NVIDIA driver will ignore
[   547.956] (WW) NVIDIA(0):     this GPU.  Continuing probe...

Is it possible to keep using my old video hardware or is a more current card absolutely required?

(I have the nVIDIA 173.14 driver .run package - but the system needs compiler tools installed.)

Just wondering...

Thanks,

-Ben

nVidia stopped updating the 173 branch years ago and by many reports it doesn't work with Xorg beyond 1.16. R8.4 uses Xorg 1.18.

Got it.

ok -- thanks for the info. I'll look to upgrade.

(Sigh)

Another fabulous/working video card into the reject pile. Unwanted. Unloved. Destined to be chewed up and spat from a eRecycling machine. :(

ha! As a humorous update..

Looking into the machine.. yea... completely scraps the motherboard and everything.

The FX5200 was AGP. :(

SO....... Oh well. Anyone want an old Abit motherboard? :D
