I noticed that we have moved to a new file format where some files are now in a date sub-dir.
But logrotate does not look in those directories so they will never be deleted (I think)

I altered /etc/rsyslog.conf to revert to the old and easy to understand method of having the files in the /var/log dir.
You can see the previous file location there but commented out.
Then just delete all your old dated dirs.

/etc/cron.daily/log_care handles maintenance of the logs.

Thanks, I missed that one, not sure why I have more than a weeks worth though.

It looks like the $DATE directories have a different mtime and don't get removed with the files. The directories older than 7 days are empty here.
