Post subject: | After reboot X / Frontend doesn't start [SOLVED] |
Today I was playing around with the video resolution settings (CPU +, Normal selections). After I rebooted the machine the front end and X doesn't come up, it just has the LinHES background with 100% booting. I would like to include what it says when I press F2, but I dont know where to find that log. I looked in the dmesg, but there were no errors, but included it anyways. Could someone please help me outta this mess. Let me know anything else I can provide, since I am really not sure where to look. Thank you, Mitch Here is what is running for user mythtv: Code: PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 5601 mythtv 37 17 123m 49m 12m S 8.6 4.9 2:03.10 mythcommflag 4504 mythtv 20 0 264m 38m 13m S 2.0 3.8 0:50.95 mythbackend 5617 mythtv 20 0 2176 1056 828 R 0.3 0.1 0:00.02 top 4466 mythtv 20 0 11328 9436 2168 S 0.0 0.9 0:00.32 mediaserv 5243 mythtv 20 0 11328 7740 476 S 0.0 0.7 0:00.00 mediaserv 5244 mythtv 20 0 11328 7744 476 S 0.0 0.7 0:00.00 mediaserv 5245 mythtv 20 0 11328 7744 476 S 0.0 0.7 0:00.00 mediaserv 5246 mythtv 20 0 11328 7744 476 S 0.0 0.7 0:00.00 mediaserv 5247 mythtv 20 0 11328 7744 476 S 0.0 0.7 0:00.00 mediaserv 5428 mythtv 20 0 8948 1672 1156 R 0.0 0.2 0:00.51 sshd 5429 mythtv 20 0 4752 1844 1452 S 0.0 0.2 0:00.02 bash Here is the dmesg output: Code: BIOS EBDA/lowmem at: 0009f800/0009f800 [/code]

look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log for the reason X didnt start. That may give you a clue. |

So it looks like you have an error in your /etc/X/xorg.conf file. Find the word "Copy" and you should find your error. |

Ran those commands, Upon reboot now the screen works as it should, but I have lost all mouse and keyboard control. Arrows dont work, NOTHING. I still have access through SSH though. Mitch This is my new xorg.conf: Code: # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig

Post subject: | Got it! |
Other Post jzigmyth wrote: Two possible ways out. There should be a xorg.conf.install file that was the original one made by the r6 upgrade. You could take that file and copy the Monitor Section, Device Section and Screen section of the r5.5 file over those sections in the r6 file and make it the xorg.conf file and restart x with "pkill xinit". (by the way, after doing 4 "pkill xinit"s without a reboot in between will hang the frontend process. You can unhang it by "sv restart frontend" for 4 more tries)
I still had the xorg.conf.install file and just copied it over and worked like a charm. Those developers think of everything! Thanks for everyone's help! Mitch |
