A power saving wiki entry:

Quote:
Consider an SSD for the root drive, so that the media drives can spin down easily when not in use. SSDs use as little as 1/2 Watt when idle. A CF card and adapter, or network boot would be cheaper alternatives

Ok, so I have two options:

* Boot from a USB device (probably an 8GB USB Flashdrive)
* Network boot: ASUS RT-N16, configured with Optware (MIPSEL LINUX)

The USB route would be better in the sense, that it would not be network dependent and more portable. Has anyone out there done this? If so, I am interested in the lessons learned. Not sure if the lessons learned are documented. Thanks

SSD HD for root
http://knoppmyth.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=21137

I am using a 16GB IMATION PRO 7500 3.5" SATA SOLID STATE DRIVE for root. It cost me $28.95 (new) on eBay. I liked the 3.5" form factor. It is identical to a 3.5" drive but only 1/2 the thickness. If you buy the 2.5" or 1.8" make sure you have all the adapters included as they will cost as much as the drive. This is my solution to boot the advanced format drives because it sounds like LinHES 7 will not have that option.

Make sure you have a couple gig of RAM setup to prevent swaps.

@TVBox: Very cool. Thanks for the links. Is there an advantage using the SSD over a USB Memory stick. My original plan I was to boot from a
8GB Verbatim Low Profile USB Flash Memory

I am assuming that the BIOS will allow me to boot from a USB flash drive.
