R8 has only a default setup for it's Transcoders Profiles.

These are the six profiles setup by default.
Autodetect from RTjpeg/MPEG4
Autodetect from MPEG2
High Quality
Medium Quality
Low Quality
Letterboxed

All of the profiles have exactly the same settings
Video
.....Lossless transcoding: Blank
.....Resize video while transcoding: Blank
.....Codec: RTjpeg
.....RTjpeg Quality: 170
Audio
.....Codec: MP3
.....Sampling rate: 32000
.....MP3 Quality: 7
.....Volume (%): 90

Question
1. how do you have your Transcoder Profiles setup in your system and why.
2. how do you setup the "Letterboxed" profile to remove the black bars from all four sides?
3. What is the purpose of the "autodetect"

Hi

Transcoding profiles - Basically use them in R8 to Transcode SD (old shows). Under Mpeg2 check the box to use loseless. That is really all you need to change. When selecting a program to transcode ...choose transcode and then choose autodetect and that's all you have to do to start the transcoding.

As far a letterboxing goes I prefer xmbc (make all programs default to 16x9). This works fine for most files except maybe a few really old PAL ones one with odd aspect ratios. You can change it in myth but it's kind of clunky and show by show.

Just last night did clean install of R8.1.1 and cannot get transcoding to work. Tried auto transcode and manually checking the box, also both transcode engines and tried lossless and a number of other settings and they all fail with "unrecoverable error" and I have not yet found the logs. Tried applying all updates, I'm stumped.. Thoughts anyone?

Go to / Myth Settings / Setup / Video / Playback

On the second screen (2/8) set Video aspect override to 16:9

This will eliminate the letterbox and black bars on playback.

I just finished up running it. I also on a clean install of R8.1.1 and cannot get transcoding to work. Also failed with "unrecoverable error" I using High Quality transcoder setup for lossless encoding and I had a cut list (clipped the commercials). Backend Log (exit status 128, job status was "Errored") Myth Transcode has error codes listed but not 128. http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Mythtranscode

tscholl
I was looking for a way to transcode out the letterboxing.
