Found this after hours of searching: amixer sset 'IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA' 0 (from http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/mon-apr ... 50883.html) That's all you need to get SPDIF output working. (optical in my case, but should be fine for both) )(&#@%(*&#@*$#^$*!^$* took me hours of googling 
This is on an ASUS A8N32-SLI mainboard using a Twinhan DVB-T receiver. Still worked after a reboot, also worked with DVD. sigh. some things aren't meant to be easy

this fixed my problem.. should definately be in the Faq for those with the intel 8x0 audio and wanting digital output playback |

This is just a bump, as I needed this exact fix for my new installation of R5F27 on my Abit AS8 motherboard (Pentium 4 based). I got sound now so I can hear my football games! Woo-hoo! |
