Post subject: | KnoppMyth version naming |
Admin edit: As you see this was originally written by tjc in January of 2007, but he has kindly edited it and it is up to date. There seems to be a huge amount of confusion on this issue lately, with people not knowing what version they're running, what version is current, and which versions are historical. As a result a write up on the naming scheme seems to be in order. The next release will be R5.5 to indicate it's status between R5 and R6. This represents a change in the naming scheme, possibly because Cecil thought it was getting too complicated and confusing for the average newbie. At the time of this writing the current version is R5F27, this breaks down as follows:
F - The update series letter within the major release. Before the F series there was the E series, before that the D series, before that there was the C series. These start with A and goes as high as necessary in alphabetic sequence. 27 - The build number within the series. Most of these never appear publicly, but Cecil starts with build 1 and goes as high as necessary in numerical sequence. The recent public release history goes like this:
R5C7 - May 2006 R5D1 - August 2006 R5E50 - December 2006 R5F1 - May 2007 R5F27 - September 2007 (recent) R5.5 - July 2008 (upcoming) You can always find the version of your current KnoppMyth install using the following command: Code: cat /etc/KnoppMyth-version
Getting the versions right in your postings is important, it lets us give you appropriate answers to your questions, and helps people who find your post in the future figure out if it applies to them. Both of which eventually benefit your self interests. Failing to know what version you're using and provide the that information in your postings will generally result in getting less than useful advice. It's hard to get the right answer if you're asking the wrong question... |

Thanks for the write-up. If this naming is ever revisited, I'd strongly recommend including the MythTV version somewhere. Maybe even tacked-on at the end. i.e. R5E50.020+ (MythTV 0.20 + fixes) That would be quite useful, I'd think. Of course, there are LOTS of versions of things in there. But being a distro focused on MythTV, it would seem natural to reference that. Just my 0000 0010 cents. |

BTW - The C series was also sometimes known as the "Cool" series, and the D series as "Delightful". |

Does that mean the E series is "Excellent" |

I always figured the E was for "Eureka!" |

That's a little bit less scary, I like that idea better. |

Doesn't anyone read the changelog? It states what the E means... Although it takes lots of effort and my personal time, I don't plan to stop working on KnoppMyth anytime soon. |

Sorry, cesman, I just re-read both the E series ChangeLogs and I did not see it in there. Would you point it out to me, please? |

From http://www.mysettopbox.tv/CHANGELOG.txt Quote: 12-25-06 Release 5 Eulogy 50 "In memory of Rob Levin" Rebuilt from scratch, based on Debian Sid and Knoppix hardware detection scripts. After looking last night I vaguely remember seeing it, but it didn't stick in my head either. BTW - before anyone panics I suspect Cecil meant to say that Quote: Although it takes lots of effort and my personal time, I don't plan [to stop] working on KnoppMyth anytime soon.
That's just a guess from reading a lot of postings by him, being familiar with the kind of typos that happen when he's in a rush, and what makes sense in context. |
