Doing:
Code:
ls -l /dev/dvd

would probably be enlightening. It _should_ be a symlink to the real drive, however, if you have multiple optical drives in the machine the setup scripts can be fooled and get this wrong.

Thanks, tjc. I'll try this when I get home tonight. There is only one drive attached to the mobo (the optical drive).

I noticed that DVDs are not mounted automatically when inserted into the DVD drive on the Diskless FE. I can manually mount them, but KnoppMyth is unaware of the disk in the drive until I do so.

Changing the settings in KnoppMyth made all the difference.

Thanks for writing this. I haven't had any problems with wget before this. But this

wget -q -O - http://www.chrisjoyce.id.au/mythtv/webinstall.sh | sh

seems to start to work, then displays

Sorry, I have not been tested on your version of KnoppMyth (KnoppMyth R5F27) ...
This dose not mean that things will not work, I just don't know
you should use at your own risk

and then is hangs there, doing nothing. I've tried running the command as root, as mythtv and as the first login I created. Same result.

Why would wget work perfectly for me in other circumstances, but not here?

Is there another way to install P_______e? That's what I need most.

At one time I downloaded the script (man wget for the right option) and then ran it. When it's on your computer, you can open the script and see where it's getting stuff, and where it's putting them if you need to do it manually.

Actually, I tried that. I downloaded it to my OS X box, scp'd to MythTV and ran chown 755 to make it executable. When I ran it, I got the exact same problem.

By hacking around in it (echo statements, commenting things out), you should be able to see what's going wrong.

On the other hand, this is a real upgrade, not just fixing a couple of menu glitches. There are far more options, the options are far more deer-in-the-headlights-looking-users friendly. And perhaps most importantly, one immediately notices how speedy it is. Oh, gotta love that Thumbnail Generator.

Hmmm, Linux... the Heathkit Oscilloscope of the 21st Century.
