Hello,

Just wondering if there is an R6 Hint and Tips post coming from tjc anytime soon. I've been leery about upgrading from R5.5 since everything is finally working pretty well. Not sure if it is really worth doing the upgrade now, since the Myth version doesn't change from R5.5 to R6.

Anyway, those Hint and Tips posts are extremely helpful to avoid going in blind about something as big as a full reinstall.

tjc has written in several posts that he's been very busy. I don't think another hints/tips thread is eminent. The R5.5 --> R6 transition for me was pretty smooth. R6 is now and is the future of KM (LH). There won't be support for R5.5 moving forward. My advice to you is to backup your old system and give it a go.

In addition to running the mythbackup scripts, you can make a complete backup depending on hdd space:

1) Boot from a live CD (Ubuntu, Arch, it doesn't matter)
2) Mount your old system partition and mount your old myth partition, then tar up the old system partition onto the myth partition as a backup (shouldn't be more than 5-6 gigs).

You probably won't need it, but it's nice to have just in case. I didn't need it and deleted it a few weeks after the R6 switch.

My system isn't that convoluted. I am most concerned about keeping my ATI All-In-Wonder II remote working, along with my USB-UIRT. It took me a while of lircd finagling to get both devices working at the same time. I'm really not interested in dealing with that again. Though, now that it is done, I should be able to take the two configs I have and do it again fairly easily (I guess).

Do you have a spare HDD? If so, even if it's way smaller, I'd recommend using gparted (or do it manually) to re-create your live R5.5 system on it. Then do the upgrade on it and see how it goes before doing it on your live system.

Should be as simple as copying the /dev/sda1 over to the new drive. Create a swap space for /dev/sda2 and use the rest for your myth partition as /dev/sda3 which is how the default R5.5 setup should be. You can manually copy of the myth partition omitting your /myth/tv if the 'test' HDD is smaller.

It would be great if someone could start a wiki page for R6 Hints and Tips.

@turpie - that's the whole point of a wiki. You're the author. Go ahead and start one. You can then post soliciting others to add to your article as I have done when I started the LinHES page on the Arch wiki for example.

You know what you're right I should have just started it myself, even though I haven't actually done the upgrade to R6 yet and have no actual knowledge to contribute.

So you can now find the R6 Hint and Tips page on the ArchWiki. It's pretty lacking at the moment but hopefully people will start to fill it out.
Here is the announcement.
