Post subject:  My blinky keyboard light fix
This may be better off in [Problems and Solutions] except that I cannot post there....


My system:
Chaintech 7NIF2
AMD 2500+
512 mb Ram
Samsung 160 Gb
PVR-250

After doing a Auto Install and Knoppmyth is running normally, if I leave the system alone for a while (not sure of amount of time) the screen goes black. About 10% of the time I can press a key on the KB and Knoppmyth will come back, but the other 90% of the time, I get the dreaded KB lights flashing, requiring a reboot.

I solve this by typing: (as root)
setterm -blank 0
setterm -powersave off

After I do this, the machine never goes black and thusly does not crash.

Does anyone know where I can put these commands so that they start at boot?

This is a good hint. I'm seeing the same phenomena using an Abit nForce-2 board with onboard nVidia display. It may be worthwhile to try to track the m/b, chipset, and video card used to see if we can find out which part is causing the problem.

OK I am game. Aside from the components posted above, what info would you like? I just found out that the PVR-250 is bad and I will be replacing it shortly. It may have been part of the problem. Tonight I will do a install without the PVR in the system and I shall let you know if it still does it.

I've installed KnoppMyth R4V4.1 last week and have the same problem. The screen gets blank and the keyboard blinks. See my signature for my hardware. My ShuttleX has nVidia nForce2 Crush18G chipset and onboard nVida GeForce4 MX.

All three of us seem to have that combo -- nForce2 with built-in GeForce MX graphics. Can you tell me which graphics driver you are using? I'm using the nVidia driver you get when you install from "nvidia-install.sh" and I have XvMC installed as well.

Post subject:  reinstalling
I am about to reinstall, but the last drivers I had were NOT the included drivers but newer drivers from nvidia. (I dont recall the version at this point) I followed either a post or a wiki entry on how to do it. I will find it and post the version though.

I dont think it will end up being the drivers though since I have seen it happen to me during an install, before the driver is loaded.

If I get some time away from the family tonight I will reinstall without the PVR and see if the PVR was doing it.

Has anyone else run into this problem?

I've got very similar hardware (see the signature block) and it's working fine. I'd suggest reviewing my notes under Tier 2 to see if they point out anything you missed. More details might also help us diagnose the problem.

For the Shuttle I want to know, BIOS version, Motherboard revision, ... Also be sure to double check the setting of "C1 Disconnect" in your BIOS, I think it's under the "Advanced Chipset Options" menu.

My board (7NIF2) doesnt have C1 disconnect or anything else related to C1. Is that a memory timing option? Perhaps I can find somthing similer...

Its not PVR related, it isnt in the system and I had the same thing happen,

Using Aida 16 in the Ultimate Boot CD my system is:
AMD Athlon XP 2000mhz 2400+
MOBO ID- 09/05/03-nVidia-nForce-IF61BC2CC-00
MOBO Name- Chaintech 7NIF2
Chipset- nForce2 IGP
Bios- Award PnP (09/05/03)
Bios Type- Pheonix Award v6.00PG
Bios Message- 7NIF2 09/05/03
Bios Date- 09/05/03
Video Bios Date- 11/14/02
Samsung 160Gb Pata drive
Toshiba DVD

I couldnt find any thing resembleing a board rev on the mobo....

The C1 setting is a pretty standard Athlon/Nvidia thing and since you have a Phoenix BIOS like the Shuttle SN41G2, it should be there. Have you made sure you've got the most current BIOS? Actually, never mind, I just checked and your BIOS is WAY out of date. See this page: http://www.chaintech.com.tw/tw/eng/Download/dl_desc.asp?DCSNo=4&PISNo=15
You probably need to update it. As for the motherboard rev. that's often easier to get off the silk screen on the Mobo itself.

Thanks for your support. I have bios version S025 and have installed the included nvida driver in RR4V4.1 and the XvMC. I will check the C1 disconnect setting and report the result later.

I was looking @ the mobo and have not located a board rev. Does anyone with a 7NIF2 know where I might locate it?

Hmmm... Not having access to your machine to read the dates reported at boot time ;-) I was going by the dates on the most recent version, and the date reported by the program you ran, which were about a year apart.

OBTW - The C1 disconnect is a power saving/heat thing basically when it's enabled it allows the CPU core to more or less shutdown despite bus activity (like a DMA transfer). This causes a serious problem with at least the version of the Linux kernel KnoppMyth is using.

Post subject:  BIOS update
OK I did the BIOS update and I still have no C1 disconnect. I dont think it is an option that the 7NIF2 supports.

However after following Xtophers post on getting a 7NIF2 and PVR250 installed, I now have a working system. Including TV Audio which was NOT working before. I left the system on a TV channel all night to see if it would hang WITHOUT adding the setterm commands and it didnt go into that state. Today while I am at work I will leave it with just a menu on screen to see if the problem has gone away.

So it may have been the BIOS or the install....


****UPDATE****
It was neither. I just added the setterm strings to this install in the bootmisc file. I have had the screen blank on me and then crash coming out of it. Hopefully it will fix it for me.
