Since Knoppix is based on Debian, install programs is extremely easy! If you'd like to install another editor or any other programs:
#apt-get update
#apt-get install pico

Take it from a Debian newbie don't make the mistake of doing...
#apt-get upgrade
This makes a real mess that is best recovered from via a fresh install.

You should best do something like:
#apt-get upgrade
-or-
#apt-get distupgrade
[hit 'n' for no]

Check the update list and see what programs you want updated.

btw, 'apt-get upgrade' shouldn't cause that much mess, distupgrade however will try to also remove packages to satify as much possible dependecies.

actually a straight upgrade will cause problems on knoppmyth, because it uses the knoppix sources list which includes a bunch of regular debian repositories, while much of knoppix is customized.

upgrade destroys recording and playback on my box, I'd stay well clear.
Default install for me all the way, and ten maybe a little apt-get update so i can install stuff .. eggdrop, the joys of debian :D
