Don't even challenge the stability. If you are having problems look to bad memory, corrupted install cd, static electricity, over temp cpu and things of that nature.

Oh come on not that old chestnut.

Given that it locks up every time in the exact same place and I've stated twice that I now know that the issue is happening when interlaced output is used.

Re TJC, I spent further time investigating and can find no way to stop the lock-ups when interlaced output is used. Once I've assurred myself there is no workaround then I will file it. I'm not trashing MythTV, but on a stability thread if every time I enter 'previous recordings' I get a lock-up what am I expected to conclude?

Re M$ - MCE lasted about 10 minutes on a machine before it was wiped, what a joke piece of software that is, at least M$ are consistent! I've spent a lot of time working with Myth as it is the 'ONLY' potentially viable non-commercial option. Just cos 'I' haven't found it stable 'yet' doesn't mean I don't like it.

Hi HappyTalk,

:)

I have found some pieces of hardware that just don't fly right however once you are up and running it should be stable. I did have a box that everything worked until I went into weather. It would immediately close out the frontend. A memtest of a few hours reveled a bad spot in the upper range and that didn't show up until a fresh install was done.

Other than too double check out everything, I don't have any magic suggestions.

Mike.

Well my reason for being dismissive of the hardware being problematic was it WAS running windows 24/7 for over a year and I've run memtest etc. Re my lock ups I am narrowing it down, and will eventually discover exactly why, when I get more time.

Hi HappyTalk,

May I suggest dropping back to A16 or A26 (fresh install) and see if the trouble continues? Looking back at your hardware, 2.4 ghz FX5200 should be more than plenty.

May you have good hunting.
Mike

One of the main offending components that is the hardest to diagnose the PSU. When you have problems with stability this is generally the last place you look. The way it manifests itself is quite diverse so you can't just say that if this happens it is the PSU.

Just throwing my hat in the ring.

I don't want to keep repeating myself, but MY lockups are ALWAYS caused in the exact same places, so if I don't go to those pages it doesn't lock up. As one of them is 'previous recordings' that is difficult. I've found a way to stop it happening as described earlier, but not yet how to stop it with the config I need to use. So nothing to do with hardware (nforce2-igp + 2 ghz chip not fx5200+2.4?)

Follow-up I eventually traced the source of my lockups to

Option "RenderAccel" "1"

it is now and will forever remain

Option "RenderAccel" "0"

in the Device section of XF86Config-4. I don't know exactly why only this ONE myth screen caused the lockup OR if later nvidia drivers / later Myth have fixed this. I very much doubt I'll even be turning it on again. I post this for future reference in case some other user suffers this issue.
