I want to play dvd's in a system which used to have a cd rom but I recently upgraded it to a dvd rom.

it's got the specs listed below useing R5C7

I tell it to play the dvd and it flashes some error for a split second then returns to the menu, too fast for me to read it.

Then I suggest you try running the frontend from an xterm. When the error occurs, exit and take a look at the output. Keep in mind, KnoppMyth doesn't included the ability to play encrypted DVDs.

What do I need to install to be able to play encrypted dvds?

Search the forum, it isn't spelled out anywhere as I forbid it....

if anyone has details of how to play encrypted DVD's please let me know through e-mail as I only have 56K and dont have the time to spend the hours to search the forums.

and my problem was the encrypted DVD issue

If you search for "encrypted DVD" (don't forget to click on the "Search for all terms" check box) and run down the list of posts you should find the required clue in under 2 minutes. That might even be the title of the thread.
