yesterday night when i came home my myth box didnt show any of my recorded episodes, so i decided to reboot as it's been haveing a few issues lately.

once i rebooted the GUI gave me an error saying it couldnt log me in because it couldnt access the home directory or the hard rive was full. I logged in as root and cleaned out a few old recordings manually and attempted to start the backend. an error camup saying it required a minimum of 2.1 gb which I know it now had as I deleted at least 4 gb.

I then tried a reboot and kept getting those same errors.

I figure theres a way of "defragging" the drive where it references the catalog file, or whatever its called, and fixes this sort of problem. I dislike linux for this reason, you have to memorize too many darn codes to get it to work with you.

this is my last resort before reinstalling/reformatting and losing all my settings/customizations and about 100gb of recorded shows

you might try a df -m to see where your space is used.

i would bet that it is in your / dir and it is log files taking all the space somewhere in /var/logs
if you have problems with your box those logs can fill up quite quickly.

that might do it, I sometimes forget that linux is screwy and partitions in three or more sections... I dislike that as well.

why would it be generating log files?

I guess the best solution right now would be get in back it up and reinstall then restore the backup

Reinstalling? Talk about killing flies with a sledge hammer! If you're running R5C7 or earlier see the log rollover fix in this thread: http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9261 It's a much tidier way of fixing the problem so it won't just happen again in a month or so.

Also, both partitioning and logging are done for very good reasons.

no i just whiped the logs... dont care if it's for a good reason, cant be good enough because it still works!

Log files are like shoes, you can live without them, but there are times when they make life a lot more comfortable. Even Barefoot Mike wears boots in January.
