post the iwlist scan section for your ap and the output of iwconfig.

we can try to set the essid and channel by hand and then run dhclient.

I am using that same driver without any problems..

OK, here's the /interfaces file too

Code:
auto wlan0 lo

iface lo inet loopback

iface wlan0 inet static
        address 192.168.1.8
        netmask 255.255.255.0
        gateway 192.168.1.1
        wireless_essid NETGEAR
        wireless_mode Managed
        wireless_key1 <real long key here>

yeah, i put back the encryption for the time being. I didn't want to leave the network open all day.

Here's my "route -n" whatever that means, I have no idea.

Code:
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 wlan0
0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 wlan0

do a:

iwconfig wlan0 mode ad-hoc
iwconfig wlan0 essid "NETGEAR"
iwconfig wlan0 channel 12
iwconfig wlan0 mode managed

then run the iwconfig command to see if it picked up the AP. If it did you should see the
MAC addy of it on the AP line when you do the iwconfig command.

If the above does not work, try the same thing with encryption turned off on both sides.

tail /var/log/messages every now and again to see if anything strange kicks up.

I have not specifically installed this usb NIC on knoppmyth, but I did get it working on ubuntu and kantoix. I followed the install instructions and got the driver from here:

http://zd1211.ath.cx/

Make sure you use the instructions to verify which chipset you have and then download the appropriate driver and compile.

Then I just did:

ifconfig wlan0 up
dhclient wlan0

and it worked very well. This was with the router set in totally open config. I did not try setting up encryption, but I image if you get it to connect with dhclient, that everything will probably work from there.

Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've gone over that site with a tooth and comb, trying different suggestions. This is what I got after trying the above.

Code:
No DHCPOFFERS received.
No working leases in persistent database.

Sleeping.

Again I verified that the router is DHCP enabled.

I tried the above, but still no love with an AP. When I go to ad-hoc mode a Cell: xx:xx:xx comes up. If I go to Master mode the MAC of the NIC goes to AP. But when I go to managed mode I get nothing! Also when I do a few iwconfigs together, I can see the Frequency changing. Doesn't seem to stay on the same channel. I've currently got the encryption turned off.
