jimmyfergus, I appreciate your willingness to offer advice, but it's clear to me that you haven't used VMWare Server to create your own virtual machine in Windows, and I'm on my own.

I just explored all possible setup choices for creating a virtual machine of my own, using the free VMWare Server.

I found out the key to getting an IDE hard drive in the virtual machine - choose the Custom setup rather than the Standard setup. Then, you get the choice of IDE hard drives! After that, KnoppMyth installed just just like it would on a physical pc with a blank hard drive.
