If you're tired of rc-update.d or can't remember exactly what all you've got starting at boot:

rcconf (apt-get install rcconf)

I stumbled accross it while torturing myself with a debian from nothing amd64 install.

I just discovered this program today. Makes turning on/off things at boot time trival. 8)
