I had this posted before, but i figured it would be better this time to start fresh

I want to control the output volume from my PVR350 with the remote.
the solution offered before was to change my mixxer settings, and route the sound through the line in. but this led to sound quality issues as it both lowered the volume and added sound noise.

I'm thinking there is another way, and I'm looking for advice from others who probably solved this years ago

Routing the 350 output via the sound card is the preferred way to go. Otherwise you simply cannot control the output of the 350. You either send it via the sound card so you can control it via myth and the myth remote, or you use the remote for the amp that you plug the 350 output into.

Low volume sounds like a config issue (setup/master/pcm/recording profiles) and any extra noise is most likely introduced by bad cables/connections. I guess your sound card may be lousy but that should show up in DVD and music playback if the case.

If you're having sound issues it may also be ivtv firmware problems, but then it would happen with direct output from the 350 as well.

my direct output fromt he 350 is good and mp3 playback is decent (loses some bass quality)

I am useing the built on sound from the KM2M motherboard, I have considered dropping in a live! 5.1 platinum card I have lying around at home, but fear setting that up is beyond my means and would mean running setup again and losing all my recordings.

I cannot check the dvd sound quality as i dont have a dvd drive for this machine yet

Good show :-)

I'm not sure if I understand your reference to a folder, but if you mean 'setup/master/pcm/recording profiles' then this was a cryptic reference to the three(?) places where volume is dealt with in myth (IIRC):

1) mythtv-setup, you can specify whether remote controls master or pcm volume slider, and set default levels for each (I think)
2) mythfrontend, setup menu, tv settings, recording profiles, you can set volume to be used for recording
3) mythfrontend, setup menu, tv settings, transcoding profiles as well I think

If your volume is low check all these things and set all to 90% default as a starting point, or just make them higher.

With respect to the noise, your combination of adaptors etc sounds dodgy. Have you tried wiggling things while watching tv to see if something is loose? Can you try a different cable? If your mp3 playback is OK then there's no reason why your tv should be different.

You need to persevere with this because there is no way to control the output of the 350 on the 350 itself.

cables are not an issue, infact i hooked it all back up and reequalized with windows till i can fix it in linux (I'm running th mythbox into my windows box's tv card LOL)

I noticed a decrease in noise (probably from useing different cables and routing them different)

but leves are still lower than what i want.

I'll try the suggestuions you listed and post my results, thank you

sorta worked... still have to equalize with windows, but not quite as bad...

I could just make an inline amp for the PVR to the line in, not like I haven't built enough LM386 based micro amplifiers before.

I will also be upgradeing to the Live 5.1 card I have at home as soon as I have a chance to put my hands on it. this WILL be a later post on how the hell do i add harware into an existing linux machine...

Plug it in and reboot. :D When I added the second tuner card that's all it took for it to detect it and pop me into the appropriate config dialog. Not sure it'll be quite that easy with a sound card, but it's worth a try.

Hi,

Did you ever run alsamixer? You can change levels there also and turn off things like the mic which will give you noise.

turns out there was a setting called "external amplifier" and my line in was at 90% so I took it up to 95 and anabled the external amp or whatever...

makes no sence considering what it's labled, but it's louder.
