Post subject: | Mplayer Issues: LIRC and Choppy Video |
Good Morning All, I have been trying to work through some issues with MPlayer. My first issue is with LIRC. I have a Silverstone LC10M case with built in IMon receiver. I setup LIRC with my Harmony 890 remote. I can not get MPlayer commands to execute through LIRC. Some of the issue is getting the repeat and delay setup correctly for LIRC because Play and Pause execute for a second and then resume. I cannot execute any other commands like fast forward or rewind. I copied the MPlayer input.conf from the MPlayer examples to ~/.mplayer and setup LIRC to use the buttons listed in the input.conf. I am not at home so I can't post any configuration files. My other issue is with watching video with MPlayer. The video appears to be choppy. When I ssh into my myth box and run top, I see the cpu using only about 3-4% utilization. I have looked at other threads relating to choppy video and mplayer, but these did not seem to relate to my situtuation. Thanks for any help. |

I'm afraid I cannot offer any thing to do with your remote, but as for stuttering - have you optimised your harddrive dma? Take a look at this: http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=Optimize+Hard+Drive+Performance And follow the instructions. Hope this is of some help. |

Thanks Tophee, I ran hdparm /dev/hda and it already indicates that dma is on. Dan |

It may well be on, but you might need to add the optimisations. |

Tophee, Thanks again. I have added the optizations and will see if they offer any better performance. I also added one other tweak that I hope will help. I am not sure if it does anything for mplayer or not, but it is worth a try. On Jarod's FC/Myth instructions he supplies the following tip: Code: # chmod +s /usr/bin/mythfrontend I decided to apply the same change to mplayer: Code: # chmod +s /usr/bin/mplayer
Basically, this gives mplayer root privileges while it is running. Thanks again Dan http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/tips.php |

I hope the optimisations make some difference to you. Nice hints/howto page that you found there. Don't know about chmod mplayer, but if it helps ![]() |

Maybe try configuring mplayer to use a 2MB cache. I have had problems with playing videos over a network and used this to solve. Will cause a slight delay when starting up the video but isn't too bad. Code: echo cache=2048 >> /home/mythtv/.mplayer/config

I have added the optimizations and increased the mplayer cache. The video playback is much better, but I am still seeing some choppiness. Would I be better off using Xine for MythVideo? I have that working flawlessly for DVD's. That would actually get alleviate my Remote issues with MPlayer as well. |
