After having a problem with my router (related to the savvy individuals at Comcast), I had to refresh my router using the hard rest button on the back. My desktop computer's internet connection is working fine, but my mythbox seems to be having problems.

I can ping the Linksys router, or any web address by its IP, but using a name (www.yahoo.com) returns "unknown host". I guess the box is no longer getting the DNS servers correctly (it keeps setting the nameserver in resolv.conf to 192.168.1.99). Any thoughts on what I can do to get the nameserver to come through correctly?

I thought most Linksys routers can "pass-through" the DNS server numbers they're getting from the cable modem. (I'm sure there's a real term for that other than "pass through"...)

If you set your MythTV box so that its nameserver is the number of your router (i.e. the gateway IP number), it should work. I used to enter the specific DNS numbers that my router's webpage received from Comcast into resolv.conf, but now I just use the router's number and it seems to work fine.

So just set the IP to 192.168.1.1? Do I need to reboot the box for that to take effect?

Yes, IP to 192.168.1.1, not sure if you need to reboot but if it doesn't work without one, try after a reboot. (I think there's a "pump" command that might come into play here, you can search around and see if it's applicable.)

I don't believe there is a setting on your router to allow it to do this, I think it either does or it doesn't. I want to say that most current routers will do it.

If yours doesn't or you can't get it to work, as I mentioned initially, you can always hit your router's web page, see what the DNS IP numbers are you're getting from Comcast, and enter those in resolv.conf

Figured it out ... kinda. I set the nameserver to the universal 4.2.2.2 and everything is working just fine again!
