Does anyone know of a linux-based media center software package like mythTV w/o the PVR features? I have an amd k6-2/400 that I'd like to try to find a use for, and I'm wondering if it can be used as a media player.

None I'm aware of... Have you tried zapping or xawtv or tvtime? MPlayer is also capable of that you are looking for...

might want to look at freevo. last I heard they could record video, but not pause rewind etc. Of course that has been quite some time ago so they may have implemented this functionality by now.

I'm actually not looking for something that would play tv at all. I'm just wondering if there's anything small enough to play audio/video files from a local hard drive in a machine w/ such a slow processor. I'm sure mplayer can handle the media files...but is there a stripped distro designed w/ slow processor htpc's in mind?

You could install KnoppMyth. Use the i586 packages and just use MythVideo and MythMusic. You'll need to recompile MPlayer after installing.

That's what I'd really like to do, but I thought I read a post on these boards saying that KnoppMyth wouldn't install without a tv tuner card. Is that not the case?

That has nothing to do w/ KnoppMyth but Myth. You won't be able to watch TV.

It installs just fine without a capture card. The only thing it affects is the backend wont stay running. Music Video..game and such dont need the back end to be running. TV does need the backend to work
