I have been looking to use knoppmyth as a very simple player for all my audio / movies and pictures (i.e. no capture at present, primarily because I have not invested in a capture card yet). My files are stored on a couple of windows machines on various shared folders.

My question is, how do I set up mythtv to access these shares ?

I guess I need to use samba and then set up some symbolic links, but I am a bit new to Linux and would appreciate some guidance in how to do this.

Have a look through http://www.freeos.com/articles/4310/. Look for the smbclient/smbmount commands.
