[Hardware in sig]

After first trying R5C7 which I couldn't get to complete the install, I had better success with R5D1. I was able to install and get 'running' using D1. Now the problems I note at this point.

(Linux/Myth NooB! don't know my "ls" from my "apt-get" so forgive the wobbly legs. Also I've become intimate with the SEARCH, but most of it seems written in French to me... Also NOTE that I don’t have the Myth PC networked at this point I plan on getting a USB wireless adapter this week [suggestions here is welcome too] so let me know if this is causing me unnecessary problems.)

Problem 1.

Rented DVDs wont play. I get the pop up window for a second and then back to the menu. VCDs wont play either. Read about the ‘Pineapple’, the ‘examples’ and the other cryptic references... but I'm not finding the breadcrumbs. I've read about downloading a library, but I don't know how to install or even find my usb drive in Linux. Any help here (PMs?) that will make DW happy here is more then welcome.

Problem 2.

Can’t seem to get my Air2PC card up and going. Apparently the card is recognized as I go to setup the capture card, go to dvb0 and it gives me specs for the card, but not on dvb1-4 where no card is seen. But then I try to link the card in Input Connections and it shows “None”, wont find anything while scanning. Cant scan any channels. So I seem to be stuck. I’ve read about scanning ‘manually’, but cant figure that out either… (man I’m pathetic.)

With all that said, I must also include that the KnoppMyth people are great. I never would have taken the Myth plunge without this setup or community. If been watching Myth for the last 2-3 years but never jumped in due to the deep Linux knowledge that was apparently needed. Now I just want to get this box on the highway and see what she can do!

TIA

Most commercial DVDs are encrypted using something called CSS. For legal reasons involving the "anti-circumvention" provisions it includes, those of us suffering under the DMCA can't tell you much more than that, lest we (and by extension Cecil whose BBS this is) be accomplishes before the fact. As a result KnoppMyth does not and cannot include support for playing encrypted DVDs out of the box, and Cecil has asked that we tread very lightly in this area.

When it comes down to it Hollywood employs of some of the most rabid lawyers on the planet, and Cecil doesn't have any desire to become a poster boy like Jon Lech Johansen.

Yeah, that much I understand. But that doesn't 'help a brother out'. I'm sure the hints on this site are GREAT for a Linux expert, but I need a little more hand holding. Anyone?

You should try searching this forum, and the knoppmythwiki website (http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/), and the knoppmythwiki FAQ (linked at the wiki site), for the answer.

In particular, the knoppmythwiki FAQ has your particular FAQ at #5. Change directories to that directory, read the README, and it should be obvious.

Thanks for breaking it down like that. I've done the ls of that directory before but I haven't seen a readme file, only a .sh file. I'll look again later as I'm not near the box. (I'm currently reading linux info looking for a clue on how to read a readme file.)[EDIT - found 'less' command :) ]

Any thoughts on my 2nd problem?

The README is in the directory mentioned in the FAQ, not in the examples directory in that directory. It's called "README.Debian" and will give you a short description of what the situation is and what to do.

As for your Air2PC card, the only things I can think of are:

* did you set up your OTA digital channels via Zap2It?
* did you shutdown mythtv backend? (I think you still have to do this, not sure) You should have gotten some kind of message when you first ran mythtv-setup if you did not...

OK, it's starting to come together for me a bit. I will find the correct directory and get that readme.

For the Air2PC I take from your comments it won't work until I get it on my network (so I can get the Zap2It setup)... so I'll get going on a wireless solution, nonPCI/USB prefered, to network my KMbox. What are the odds of me getting the wireless card going in 20 steps or less? Oh well the adventure will continue...

I've never messed with wireless and MythTV as the bandwidth isn't there to stream HD via wireless. As a newbie, you might have better luck setting things up via wired, then once it's working, give wireless a shot. Also, be mentally prepared to reinstall if you paint yourself in a corner. I can't tell you how many times I reinstalled when I was just starting out... :)

Hi,

Things are different in different parts of the world, something to keep in the back of the mind.

As for wireless, if you can string a wire accross the floor when needed would save you a lot of grief when you are just starting out. Once you have a labs.zap2it.com account you can refresh the listings when you need to do so manually.

As a handy tool, a ubuntu 6.10 live cd is a very nice item to have laying around. You can browse the forum and obtain information, maybe find some basic command listings. Save it to the desktop while browsing and then when ready to quit, plug in a usb stick and save them for later. Reboot, pop the cd and right back into KM :)

If you know a command, ls, less, more, cd, mkdir, su, sudo, then you can at an xterm window ( alt x ) $ man ls and learn some of the many extras about the command and how to use it.

Mike

Thanks for the encouragement, I've been working on getting my usb thumb drive to work. found this thread and got it working!! :) copied over the library for problem 1 and now I just need to find out how to install... I'll look into the LiveCD, have used one before, but never got into the commands. At the moment, I'm just happy I was able to edit the auto.master file to read the usb drive!

JOY! Installed the library and played a DVD. No sound... but I'll worry about that another day. Tonight... we watch a DVD.

I ordered a USB wireless dongle, should come this week. Leaves the weekend to try and work out the wifi and maybe the Air2PC. I'm actually getting the hang of this Linux stuff.

UPDATE... I was able to get the sound working. Seems this asus board had some quirks with the older alsa drivers.

First I had to make sure the alsamixer settings were unmuted and with a good level. This got me one channel of sound and one of squeal. I looked for a 'fix/workaround' for this, but I couldn't get rid of the squeal until I updated the alsa drivers/utils/tools(?). After reading the alsa wiki I installed and updated everything and the got me sound without the high pitch squeal in one channel.

Wife was impressed with the PQ viewing a DVD but I haven't even received the DVI cable yet, so we're still watching it on VGA.

Next step the USB wireless to get me online, this will enable me to get going on the Air2PC card and OTA HD (problem 2 above)!

The forum is just that, a forum. It isn't a blob for one to log everything they do with their system. To keep it things simple, one issue per thread.

Apologies, but I was merely attempting to see these problems through to conclusion in a public forum to leave as a reference for others. (I have not seen a whole lot of discussion on this MB in one place/thread on this forum, so finding solutions can be difficult or at least time consuming.) But perhaps it is best left for another medium.

Hi,

According to http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=53187#53187, there are some sort of problems with nVidia 6150 based graphics cards like yours. Could that be what you're referring to when you say:

I'm an absolute newbie at Linux, set top boxes etc. so I don't understand much of what is written in this forum, but it appears to me like your system is working now, is it not? Did you encounter the problems referred to in the post i linked to?
