Try using the CD as a rescue disk (see the wiki for the basics) and doing an e2fsck with an alternate superblock using the -b option. You'll probably need to check the manpage for e2fsck to get the location to pass... You may also want to use the -ck options to have it scan for badblocks.

Oh, and if you don't already have the system on a UPS with appropriate monitoring software to do a clean shutdown, it's highly recommend and relatively cheap. (~$45-$60 US) Replacing the harddrive if it's fried will cost you more than that...

Put the CD in the optical drive, and if necessary adjust the BIOS boot order so that it boots from it.

Once the system comes up (running from the CD) rather than doing an upgrade or install select the menu option to "exit to a shell prompt" (or something like that).

At the shell (command) prompt type "man e2fsck".

That will give you the online manual page for that command. When disks are formatted there are multiple copies of the "superblock" made which contains the crucial indexing information. These copies give you a chnace to recover when the main copy is damaged or unreadable.

You'll then want to run something like "e2fsck -ck -b <location of 2nd superblock here> /dev/hda1". I'm coming up blank on the location of the secondary super block at the moment. Maybe someone else can pitch in.

If that all sounds too complicated or the disk is dead, dead, dead, you're probably looking at a reinstall at the very least.

it says I need to know the location of some thingy... basically I'd need to know some size thingy that was set when I formatted... 160gb hard drive what's the bit size or whatever....

Nearly all distributions use a default blocksize of 4k. I can't image Knoppmyth has deviated from that. I think that should be the number you need.

I had this very same problem on my server (running Gentoo) a couple years back after a power outage. My drives and my data were fine...I now own a really nice UPS. Ironically the power went out at my house today (maybe we are neighbors?) but thanks to my UPS I didn't have to worry! I also have a smaller UPS on my Mythbox.

all fixed now, only lost 4 shows, but like I said... the settings were more important since it took over a day to get right...

now I see newer versions have come out since my old R5C7, would it be worth my while to preform an upgrade?

Make sure no one is using the system and run mythbackup _now_, then copy the contents of the /myth/backup directory onto some other medium like a thumbdrive or a CD. If the disk has flaked out once it may again.

Also if you haven't got the system on a good UPS, get one ASAP. Any system that is left running all the time needs one. Power problems do far more damage to hardware than most people realize or want to believe.

Finally, an incident like this may be a warning that the drive is heading for "the big sleep".

more like it was an incident of rapid brown outs do to extreme wind knocking the power lines around... trust me it was an isolated incident.

but yes I will probably move my smaller ups to it and buy a biggr ups for my main system

would the up grade to... what is it now... R5E5 be worth while?

Hi,

I would wait for a couple of weeks before going for an upgrade just to be sure all is well on your current system. As tjc suggested, do a backup of the system, and save off a copy to a removable storage for the extra protection.

I read your note as a power failure and not a computer glitch so most likely the drive is ok and by using it for a little while you should be able to determine all is well.

Because you are using the 350 card, your next upgrade would have to start at the E series for easiest path as the D1 had some tricks to dance through for tv out of the 350.

A ups is a very good suggestion and worth the few $$.

but yeah it's been working great all day... I was actually thining of buying another tuner... maybe a digital one this time. I'll open a new topic in the correct thread with the questions I have on that one.

Also keep an eye on that drive. Depending on the its builtin defenses a sudden brown out or loss of power can cause a "head slap" where the read/rwrite head impacts the media. This can cause damage to the disk surface which will only increase with time.

it's a maxtor... so I'm not too worried, I've never had a failure with a maxtor
