That looks like R5D1 or before.
Gotta be before, none of my R5D1 systems have those entries (unless maybe they were updated when I added Cecil's .20 debs?)

I'm sorry, but this is confusing the heck out of me.

ntp<tab>? Tab isn't the same as <enter> for me. What's it supposed to do?
<Tab> is the auto-completion keystroke. Try ls /etc/lirc/lircd<Tab>

Tab doesn't do anything for me except beep. I am using Putty.exe to SH into mythtv. Maybe it works differently if I'm at the linux machine itself, but that machine's keyboard is in a difficult spot.

man ntpd<enter>
Ok. Is ntpd the same as ntp?
Nope

/ntpdate<enter>
I thought ntpdate was obsolete. It doesn't work for me as it's not on my machine. Why are you referring to ntpdate now?
The forward slash (/) is the search mechanism within the man pages. I don't know why EvilTwin mentioned it there.

Maybe he was just being Evil.

In attempting to get the obsolete ntpdate before removing ntp:

apt-get update

Sadly, this seems to no longer work. At least it didn't for me. My attempt to use this instruction came back with 404 errors on one of the packages, and it keeps getting stuck at 99% for the entire process.

Comment out the geole entries. Also see http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... Repository
What version of KM are you using that includes Sid and geole entries?

Huh? Comment out the geole entries? I just know how to follow instructions, sadly. I don't really know how the apt-get stuff works.

I can go look it up, I suppose, in between my semi-useless readings on ntp which seem to be dragging me into a confused tangle of links.

The version is R5E50. I did a full install on a new box months ago. Sorry, I should have mentioned that, but I figured it was assumed since the thread was about ntpdate and R5E50.

Btw, my video card (not my mb) is nForce2 based. The drift is starting to get really bad, and it's been impacting mythtv quite a bit.

I don't know if the GPU has the same effect, but have you seen http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... 2TimeDrift ? Some searching on these forums and the wiki will certainly point you in the right direction...

Thanks for the link.

Unfortunately, it looks like one of those dangerous things I'm not sure I want to play with. I spent a lot of time figuring out how to lock in specific IP addresses on my myth boxes. Took me forever to understand what the right grammar was. Repeated playing with it eventually had the lightbulb over my head.

But Lilo looks a bit more serious, with potentially Bad Things that can happen.

Since I only have a 2 minute drift over several weeks, I think I'll just keep manually changing the time rather than risk lilo.

I guess ntp works better for a lot of people, and I'm happy for them.
