So it seems KnoppMyth sets everything up as EXT3 filesystems, and I don't know of any easy way to change that during install. From some reading around, it seems people recommend XFS or JFS for mythTV's because of the improved deletion speed. I've noticed that my MythTV tends to "lock up" for 3-4 seconds when I delete files. That wouldn't be a problem, except that when it's recording in the background I tend to lose 3-4 seconds from the recording. I just last night enabled "Delete Files Slowly" which seems to have fixed the problem for me, but I haven't seen this documented anywhere in the Knoppmyth setup stuff. Has there ever been any consideration to switchign to a different FileSystem? Or making Delete Files Slowly enabled by default (since it seems to be kinda necessary for EXT3) ? |

This page from the Knoppmyth Wiki should help. It's a little dated but the basic process still works the same. Just note that you no longer have a live TV buffer in newer versions of Knoppmyth. http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... tem+switch Martian |

If you decide to swtich, XFS is wunnerful. I use it on my KM box and I record lots of HD shows -- 8GB and larger files are common. It used to kill me to delete files using ext3 but with xfs they are gone in a couple of blinks. And no glitching on the recorder. |

How much does tar compress the myth content? I have a 250 gig drive that I am considering changing to xfs, but it is around half full. I'm not sure if I would be able to pull it off without deleting some items first or not. |

Tar doesn't compress stuff, it just bundles things together. It's gzip and bzip2 that compress stuff. The big problem is that compressing something that's already compressed simply doesn't work. Most video/audio codecs are already doing lossy compression. Not only are they squeezing it as hard as they can, but they're throwing out some data so they can squeeze it even more. Things like this are very hard to gain any ground on. |

Is there any disadvantages to going with XFS or JFS? If not, how come this isn't the standard for a new install? |

Because before a recent E release the initramfs wouldn't correctly handle the modules required. And it probably won't be present in the next E series either. But look for it to be a choice in the "upcoming" R6 releases. |

In my case, I set up a separate hard drive for /myth and used XFS on that disk. I found it to be beneficial that MySQL and video files are on separate disks -- I think it makes some operations go faster. I can commflag almost as fast as the show is recorded -- using HD cards, which require almost no CPU. The commflag of a 1 hour show typically takes 15 minutes longer than the show itself. (I have commflag running concurrently with the show recording.) The next time I update my KM box, I'm going to dedicate one 750G drive for /myth/tv using XFS, another 750G for /myth/video probably XFS as well, and a 300G drive for / using ext3. This should give me about 100 hours of HD programming, about 100 DVDs as full ISO rips, and extra storage for the distro and the rest of /myth (music, etc.). I might separate the /myth so I can tune its inodes. |
