I'm looking to explore other file systems for large file/quick deletion reasons. Any input/experiences would be helpful. Currently I'm leaning to JFS with XFS running a close 2nd.

TIA

I've used JFS on /myth for about 2 years now with no issues.

I have been using XFS (/myth partition only) for a couple of years now.

The main reason for the switch was the time it took to delete the large files produce when recording HDTV.

I'd like to know if JFS is a better choice than XFS for the /myth partition.

I have very good experience with JFS. I chose it for its supposed performance with big files, but I really don't have any comparison data. I did find out, however, that it is quite superior in an fsck situation. What took 4-6 hours with ext3 (~1TB) now takes around 20s typical.

However, this is on my file server and I don't know how well JFS is supported on KnoppMyth. Compatibility should be the biggest concern. JFS isn't the biggest file system around, but seems to be well written.

During one of my early KnoppMyth installs I was using XFS with an LVM setup (2 x 200gb + 2 x 80gb). Things were great until one of the 80gb drives failed and I couldn't repair the volume. I suspect that it was more based on the fact that I had a drive fail rather than blame it on the file system but I've been a little skiddish about going back. Though, the file performance with XFS was superior to EXT3 just like jimdoc said. The delete time was amazingly fast where with EXT3 the hdd light stays on for quite some time. When I build my next box it will probably have one big drive and use XFS.

I've tried all the others. I think I'll stick with the ext? filesystems for awhile.

If you use HDTV, you MUST reformat your drive to XFS RIGHT NOW! :P

Seriously, I had all sorts of glitches in recordings when I used EXT2/3. One recording would finish and another would start, and I'd get a glitch on other recordings every time. And the delete time was KILLING me.

XFS is a godsend. It handles huge files better than any other FS I've tried. I searched the Gossamer threads before deciding on XFS and I've never been sorry.

I also have an LVM system and feel like I'm living on borrowed time. But make no mistake, that is because of LVM, not XFS. If your volume screws up no filesystem will save you.

When I rebuild my KM box (which will be very very soon) I'm going to use one 750G drive as /myth/tv and another as /mytn/video. Those are my two heavy-hitters, so I'll just throw big drives at those two partitions. My measly 300G boot drive will have / and /myth partitions. As a side benefit, I can tune the fs for large files on the /myth/tv and /myth/video partitions while leaving /myth optimized for smaller files (and probably leave it on EXT3 as well).

Hi,

I have been using the KM default ext3 through the years without problems but that was with analog tv. With HD I have been at a marginal edge.

Liv2Cod would you post the command line you use to format the /myth partition for the XFS?

I have some roughness when viewing hd live, recordings play back without issue and thinking that the file deletion may be the problem so would like to try the XFS.

Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike --

For a first step try the page on the wiki --

http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page ... tem+switch

There are some options that can be applied to XFS to tune it, but I have not investigated those yet. I started this evening and got distracted.

I wound up researching the original inventor of Gentoo, who recently worked for Microsoft and quit, and who started Gentoo in my hometown of Albuquerque, NM. And I've never even USED Gentoo. Somebody should take away my browser...

Found some benchmark info on the MythTV mailing list...

The thread references this site which did the benchmarking:
