This all started when I downloaded the MythDora DVD iso 3 times (1012MB) trying to get the sha1sum to match! After the 3rd time I decided to check up on sha1sum as the problem. It seems that both md5sum and sha1sum are producing semi-random results. after a few cycles, it gets consistant, but summing a different file often seems to start the random results again. What could cause this? I'm going to pull the RAM DIMMs and test them individually with memtest86. I'll follow up. I'd love to hear feedback, even if it is like "That's crazy. I get stable answers for both MD5 and SHA1. Your RAM or HD would be my first guesses. |

It was my RAM. I tested it with memtest86 just after posting that message. I had just got from NewEgg an additional 1GB DDR 400 to add to my existing 512MB. The new one was bad. Here is where is gets worse. I noticed that my DDR 400 was running at 166MHz, so I opened the bios to turn it up to 400MHz. As soon as I hit F10 to save and exit, the screen went black. I never got video to come out again. I can power the machine on, but I see nothing on the display. I tried resetting the CMOS. Still nothing. I don't know what component is bad, and I have no spare hardware to test with. I think I'm done with MythTV. I can't justify buying more hardware when I don't know what I did to what I have. It's not fair to my family. |
