I was listening to Leo Laporte's radio show today (8/12/07). A lady called in who turned about to be a retired grandmother. She talked about how she used Suse linux and loved it. She also raved about how easy it is to use.
She is on a fixed income and didn't want to pay for Microsoft's OS. I dont think he has posted an mp3 of the show yet, it is about 40 minutes in.
At one point she talked about how she really like the "little box where you can type words in, instead of clicking on the pictures". Leo said "Oh, the command line!" and she answered "It is so easy just to type in what you want it to do and it just does it". Take that all you anti-command line buttheads!
Now that Grandma's are using Linux, I dont feel so cutting edge anymore. Is there anything else we can use? Now I"ll tell my friends "I use Linux" and they reply "Linux? My grandma uses that...haha...."

That's great stuff. All of it from can't afford MS to command line being easier. If you can find the broadcast, please post it: it'd be good to quote.

I've installed ubuntu on old hardware for users who have never used any kind of computer before and have barely even heard of Windows and there aren't any complaints about it being too hard to use. It's only users who are used to windows who have problems.

Leo has finally posted the show here:

He starts talking to her about 21:30 in. She is using PCLinux, rather than Suse, which he orignally said during the show.
Go grandma, go!

She was using SUSE until she heard it was "owned" by Novell a big company and she didn't want to get burned by a big company again. I wanted to jump through my iRiver t30 and hug that woman.
The best part is she called because she was trying to get her Skype wi-fi phone working for her cross country trip so she could call her grandchildren.
