Post subject:  how to get colored text in the console?

I have been searching around a bit and can't find out why when I connect to my xbox that has xebian 1.1.4 on it I get coloed text for directories and files. But, I don't have it on Knoppmyth. I realize that it isn't something that is just in the console it has to be something in the OS somehow. I had tried a few different things out but natta. Its some much nicer to work with so if anyone knows why please tell me. Thank you.

Thanks but, that isn't the answer I was looking for as I explained in the post I can change the terminal color like your link shows. I am looking for a file or a profile or something that sets the text color for directories. Basicly there must be a file in Xebian that explains attributes. I am a little confused because, when I use the console in knoppmyth there is no color in the console but, the same console I ssh to my xbox and as soon as I connect I get color in the console. So thats why I don't think its just something that is set in the console but, I could be wrong since I only have 5 weeks on linux.

You mean like if you type ls --color?

In your bash startup script (.bashrc) add alias ls='ls --color'

That didn't exactly work as I was looking for. Maybe if I could find out why xebian had a nice color scheme I could do the same in knoppmyth. If anyone knows where I should look in xebian I could copy that file to knoppmyth and hopefully same thing. I know it seems a little trivial but, it makes things alot easier and faster as the directories are colored.
