Nvidia just released some new nforce drivers that may be of some interest to the people trying to use spdif. I don't use it, so I haven't tried it, but from the changelog it looks promising.

Release Highlights for 1.0-0274:

* Fixed performance problem in network driver that was causing stuttering in audio playback
* Added support for nForce3 platforms
* Added audio control panel application
* Added 6 channel output, audio input selection, speaker selection, per channel volume control, and analog / digital enable to audio driver.

* Added GART patch for kernel 2.4.21

Yes, I saw this new nforce driver as well yesterday and of course tried it out immediately. Unfortunately I had no luck... :( so I'm still one of those not being able to get sp/dif out to work properly. See this post http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1621 for more details.

So is trying to get S/PDIF out working on an nForce2 board equivalent to bashing my head against a brick wall (only less fun)? Especially given that I am in no way a Linux expert.

That's really the last remaining step in getting my MythTV box permanently installed in my home theater system.

I followed the link listed above... not only don't I have an /etc/asound.conf file, but when I do a cat /proc/asound/pcm, it only lists one device...

00-00 : Intel ICH : NVidia NForce2 : playback 1 : capture 1

This articlein the MythTV mailing list archives seems to imply I should see an IEC958 entry.

Thanks for any leads.
