Fra, it's great that you're putting together a wiki howto. My experience was that I had to do the edits to make the automounter work. Based on my (very limited) experience with the R5F27 scripts and automounter, I believe it is necessary to make the edits, but perhaps other people reading this thread can comment on their experience.

i think so too. i think (based on what i collected from reading up on this) what happens when you plug the drive in (without editing auto.master) is that the machine identifies it and reads the label, creating a directory, and then waiting to be told to mount it. that's why i see it but have nothing in it! autofs is really meant to mount filesystems but can be used to mount drives as well, and that's done by pointing out the mount points and so on (editing auto.master, etc). so i too think it is necessary to do the editing in order to have it automount.
