| Post subject: | Entire machine hangs after a few minutes |
I got my hands on a Dell 8300 P4 2.6Ghz machine to upgrade my backend server. I swapped the drives and PVR500 into the new machine and booted up. I had to wait a few minutes for ata1 and ata2 to time out (SATA ports) and then everything started up perfectly. However, after a few (10-15) minutes of run time, the machine would just hang. The video still displayed but outherwise, the machine was dead. At this point, it was getting late so I swapped the hardware back. Is there a good set of tools that I can get to exercise the machine to try to pinpoint the cause of the hang? I would like to start with the basics like CPU, disk I/O, memory, etc... Once I'm sure that the hardware is good, then I can look to more advanced tests. What do you folks recommend? |

UBCD is a good tool for this. You may also want to do a backup on your old system then swap the drive and run knoppmyth upgrade. Here's a link to to UBCD http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/index.html |

That's a nice CD to have. Very useful. Dell has diagnostic utilities for download from their website. I'm going to try them. |

Hi, I have played with some Dells boxes and had issues when running two serial drives. Single drive 120 ~ 500 gig was ok but second one made it go numb. Also tried esata as an external and had same issue, lock when trying to copy recordings to new external drive. Moved the drive to internal (shorter cable) and has been running solid for over two weeks. That is on Dell Gx745 1 gig using R5F1 Mike |

I had a similar problem where the machine just hangs and it has to be restarted/rebooted every 2 days. I found out that my power source was faulty, after i replaced the power source the machine has been on for months with no problems. |

If you can crack the case open and check the motherboard as sometimes flackyness can be caused by the capacitors that have gone bad. Look for capacitors that have raised tops, they should be flat, and if they are real bad they may have leaked. |
