Post subject:  Warning messages when burning DVDs

I periodically burn DVD's using growifs from my myth box. I am recently seeing warning messages that didn't use to occur. The new messages state " the LUN appears to be stuck writing LBA=0h, keep retrying in 2ms". I see this message several times and then the burning continues and completes successfully.

Is anyone familiar with these messages and have any suggestions as to what may be causing them? Thanks!

Marc

The LUN in the SCSI world is the "Logical Unit Number", referring to the device performing the command (in this case your DVD burner). I have seen similar messages when the media is suspect or the device is having trouble performing the command - In my cases it has been SCSI tape drives (4 and 8mm DAT).

Have you recently changed the brand/type of media you are using? Have you made any changes, software-wise such as hdparm, to the device? The messages may be indicating that your burner is on it's way to out, check /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog to see if there are any other indicators.

slowtolearn, thanks for responding. I did check kern.log and messages -- no messages related to this problem. I haven't made any changes in Media or to the device's configuration. The burner itself is only 3-4 months old, although the first one I received from newegg did go bad in the first 30-days...

OK, I think I have resolved the problem -- posting the info in case this happens to someone else. In my call to growisofs I had the option "-use-the-force-luke=dao". To be honest, I don't recall exactly why I was using this -- it may have been something I lifted from some samples on the web, but the "use-the-force-luke" option is an escape hatch to activate some minimally documented features in growisofs. I removed this option and also made sure that all of my "growisofs" options came before my "mkisofs" options and the problem has gone away.

slowtolearn, thanks again for taking the time to help out.
