Man, I knew how to do this a while ago, but I can't find my damn notes. On an old redhat 6 box, I somehow figured out how to start an xsession without install anything on the LINUX machine. I had some freeware xclient software installed on my win32 box and started the xsession by typing some command similar to:

$ export screen 192.168.0.1:0

After hitting enter, my xclient software on the win32 box would see the graphical login screen for my RH box and I actually saw the desktop and was able to use all the applications as if I was sitting in front of the RH box.

That's not the correct command, and I can't for the life of me remember what it was! Any LINUX gurus out there know? (By the way, doing it this way avoids the installation of vnc and the like.)

Thanks!

I think it's export DISPLAY=192.168.0.1:0

There's an XServer for Cygwin. I tried it a few years ago when it was pretty bleading edge. Now I beleive it is part of the standard package library.

It's not exactly a lightweight install on windows though. Installing VNC on windows is much easier. I guess you were talking about installing the vnc server on the linux box though. I've never tried that.

I just use VNC. apt-get install vncserver then after it installs vncpasswd mythtv then enter in password mythtv. Now type vncserver. From your windows or mac or linux box just download and install vncviewer then vncviewer ip.to.mythbox:1. Type in the password and your done. You can add vncserver to the startup script so it is loaded each time.
