Post subject:  Intermittent Blocky Green Screen

Hi,

I have a setup with the following configuration:

Using Knoppmyth R5F27

Backend:
3GHz P4
512MB Ram
400GB HD
2 PVR 500
1 HDHomeRun
FX5200 using SVideo out

2x Diskless Frontends:
VIA EPIA MII 10000
SVideo out (On-board) on 1, and eGForce FX6200 using DVI out with a DVI->HDMI adapter.

The Television with the problem is a Sony Bravia KDL-32XBR4 using the HDMI in and the RCA audio in.

For some reason I am getting an intermittent green blocky pattern that seems to only affect the one BE and TV. This is only on SD (FE is too slow for HD)

For MPEG2 Decoder on this BE I have tried:

- Standard, libmpeg2 Standard XvMC, VIA XvMC;
- Open GL on and Off;
- Deinterlace playback on and off using Bob
- Followed numerous tutorials on HD and setting up NVidia and xorg

On the subject of which, here is the xorg.conf:

Code:
Section "Monitor"
        Identifier      "Monitor0"
        Option  "TVStandard" "HD720p"
        Option  "NoLogo" "1"
        Option "DPI" "65 x 65"
        DisplaySize    320 180
#       HorizSync    28.0 - 78.0 # Warning: This may fry very old Monitors
HorizSync    30.0 - 50.0 # Warning: This may fry old Monitors
VertRefresh  60.0 # Very conservative. May flicker.
#       VertRefresh  50.0 - 62.0 # Extreme conservative. Will flicker. TFT default.
EndSection

Section "Device"
       Identifier  "Videocard0"
       Driver      "nvidia"
       VendorName  "XFX"
       BoardName   "XFX nVidia GeForce 6200"
       Option      "RenderAccel" "1"
       Option      "NvAGP" "2"
       Option      "NoLogo" "true"
       Option      "UseEvents" "True"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
       Identifier "Screen0"
       Device     "Videocard0"
       Monitor    "Monitor0"
       DefaultDepth     24
       SubSection "Display"
               Viewport   0 0
               Depth     24
               #       1080p           720p            480p
               #Modes    "1920x1080_60" "1280x720_60" "720x480_60"
               # This TV only support up to 720p
               Modes    "1280x720_60" "720x480_60"
       EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "DRI"
        Mode 0666
EndSection

If the opportunity present I will try a screen capture, but short of that I may have to take a picture to post.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks
Victor

Have you taken care of Known Issue #4 from the R5F27 Hints?

tjc,

It was one of the first things I did (BTW, Thanks for your outstanding docs)

Here is a picture of the screen that I managed to get tonight.

It only affects the one TV, and all the others are fine.

Wow.

That looks like a decoder or video memory problem of some kind. Especially with the regular pattern. Also check for shorts on the video card, slot and motherboard, say a stray sliver of metal or the like, since something like that could also be caused an addressing issue.

Is this output only? I.e. - Does the same recording play back OK elsewhere? Or is it actually in the recording?

That's a funky effect you've got their. Does it do it in menu as well?

My guess would be borked card, or a memory problem. Did you say this boxen was using onboard video? If not have you tried swapping the vid card with a known "good one"? Equally, have you tried this with swapped memory?
I'd also go with tjc's suggestions on checking for shorts.

I've seen similar on my TV out when selecting bogus video modes. Usually as a result of hand-editing my xorg.conf.

I'll check for shorts, the only thing I can think of is the heat sink from the FX6200 is touching a bit of the chassis. I was very careful about something touching, because of the confines of the Mini-ITX case.

It isn't in the actual recording, because it only shows on the one BE. I have also noticed that it doesn't affect the .avi files, it seem to be only the mpeg2s that are recorded or are playing 'live'.

I don't think it would be the memory, because it only started when I moved to the FX6200 so I could have DVI-out. It worked OK on the VGA output for about a week. It could be a pooched card, that would would be a PITA.

In some perverse way, I would prefer this possibility. If this were the case, Would this not be from the beginning of watching a show? Right now it is OK for about 15 minutes and then it starts with the funky green grid. As I mententioned earlier, I just noticed it is not only while watching TV, it also happens when watching recorded programmes.

The xorg.conf sections are above. I have run out of ideas for them.

I am not entirely clear on what is used for the "internal player" (mplayer?). Could it be something in the switches for the player, maybe related to the resolution (1280x720_60)

Thanks everyone for your thoughts

Victor

If it takes 15 minutes for it to start, maybe it's thermal related. Try opening the case and pointing a portable room fan into it for "extra good" air circulation, and then watch a show that is known to cause the problem, and see if it takes longer for the problem to crop up.
