Post subject: | Nvidia drivers and HD Playback |
First off I am not new to linux but I've not really dug into the nuts and bolts of what is under the GUI. I'd like to learn more. I have a decent box running R5F27. 3Ghz Intel, 1GB ram, PCHD3000 and an Nvidia FX5200. The box has been working well for me over the last three years. HD playback has been improved with each new release of KM. But I have left it as base as you can. So here is my questions. Does having newer Nvidia drivers improve HD playback? If there are better drivers can someone give me some good basic instructions on how to do this? |

If you are running F27 then you should (could) have a pretty good HD playback experience. More info is needed to help though - what display are you using? What is the resolution (are you running 540P (or 1080i), 720p etc) and have you tweaked your xorg.conf as per the wiki? One of my frontends has a 5200 in it running 720P to an LCD panel - works great. To answer your specific question, I doubt you will see any difference in the drivers. |

As it stands right now the playback is pretty good. 720P and 1080I are being recorded OTA. My HDTV only has Component video in so I haven't connected the KM box to the TV. It is all playing back on a CRT screen at 1024X768. Though the monitor is capable of 1600X1200 I'm not sure how to raise the resolution. The AppleTV sounds like a good option coming down the pipes for a frontend. Maybe after the next release. |

Hi There, You will need to make some modifications to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (it is where all your video settings are). You will need to add a "ModeLine" that tells the monitor what resolution to use. You can find more information on the WIKI, you can also search for the modeline (resolution) you are looking for. Also, be sure you review you xorg log file (it is located /var/log/Xorg.0.log) You will also need to make sure your display section is setup to display the resolutions you want. SubSection "Display" Depth 15 Modes "1144x644" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 16 # Modes "1144x644" "800x600" "640x480" Modes "ATSC-720-60p" "1144x644" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 24 # Modes "1144x644" "800x600" "640x480" Modes "ATSC-720-60p" "1144x644" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 32 # Modes "1144x644" "800x600" "640x480" Modes "ATSC-720-60 Below is an example from my xorg.conf file. Your hardware sounds like plenty for flawless playback of OTA HD in the USA, if configured correctly. |

When there is fast camera movement you see what looks like horizontal lines through the screen, like interlacing(?) Slow movement video looks great. Audio is fine except for one of the PBS stations. I think they had some issues with time sync of audio being off. My HDTV had the same issue. |

First try turning deinterlacing on and select "bob 2x framerate" That works best for me. My cpu is slower than yours, so I also have "Standard XvMC" for the preferred mpeg2 decoder. If it doesn't get any better try all the deinterlacers with all the mpeg2 decoders.
