Good advice- I've been hacking linux for a long time, and occasionally even get paid for it- still, what I lack in skill I make up for in obsession (and a forum like this doesn't hurt). I saw the forum post from the Nvidia driver developer. The 512 limit is only supposed to be 'For Now' implying that 256 cards will eventually be supported as well. There's also an issue with the driver supporting up to a certain index frame (specifically 4) in h.264, but that shouldn't be an issue with the HD-PVR- just downloaded h.264 content.

I heard the same... but HD-PVR content is reported to work great and that is really my focus.

Another driver release from nVidia late yesterday. It installed fine for me, but I still don't have a supported video card. So, when I selected VDPAU for the decoder and played back some HD-PVR video, mythfrontend crashed. No surprise there.

I wonder if this one would work for the AMD crowd? It has a "GeForce 8 Series" IGP.
Yes, it should work! I have an Athlon 3500+ CPU w/o a motherboard.... hmmmm! I'd go for the Gigabyte myself.

I'm building two systems to raffle off. Both are VDPAU capable!

One thing I ran into on mythtv forums. The EPG preview and PIP doesn't work:

Allright ; from our VDPAU's guru Mark Kendall: "VDPAU currently does
not play nicely in combination with other x windows. That maybe as
much to do with Mythtv as VDPAU, but nevertheless it currently doesn't
work."

allowpreviewepg is set to false when using either opengl or vdpau renderer...

This is the same for both trunk and 0.21 with vdpau/opengl backport
