Post subject: | sudo problem |
I am having a problem with sudo from an xterm window. No matter what I do, it gives me a bad password error when I try to execute anything as root. I have tried every combination of passwords on the machine, made sure the caps lock was off(tried it on too, just to see if it did anything), but nothing makes a difference. I can hit [ctrl][alt][F1], and login in as root with the password without a problem, so I know I have the right password. I even tried reinstalling fresh from the CD, and still the same result. Is there something else I am missing? I checked the FAQ, and didn't see anything about this, and found nothing when I searched here. On a related note, are the passwords in linux only 8 characters long? I had a 10 character password for root the first time, and was able to type in just the first 8 characters, and it accepted my password at the login. Its been years since I messed with any linux systems, but it seems as though the passwords could be longer than that. Thanks, Brad |

sudo doesn't use the root password, it uses the current user's password. If that doesn't work, you will need to add that user into the /etc/sudoers also try man sudo should help you a bit more also |

I merely exited, then logged in as root, then I was able to install /usr/share/doc/...... and it worked! |

just for future reference knoppmyth is not built around sudo like some distros like ubuntu. In knoppmyth you just su then enter the root password to execute programs as root. |
