I finally got a socket 745 MSI micro ATX board with a processor and ram

I want to get a WD 1TB Green SATA2 drive to boot from the onboard SATA, but the people from MSI say they dont know if the SATA1 controller on the board will boot from the drive and that it was never designed to be compatible

any ideas? I've tried booting a linux CD and it almost kinda sorta wants to see the drive. I also have a PCI SATA2 card and a USB SATA2 drive reader so I thought I should be able to get SOMETHING to work.

So the board has an onboard SATA1 controller, and they are telling you it might not allow you to boot a SATA2 drive from it? That sounds bogus to me... I thought SATA2 vs SATA1 was mainly about transfer speed. I'd think if it boots a SATA1 drive it should boot a SATA2 drive as well.

I have a SATA2 drive hooked up to a SATA1 PCI controller and it works fine (obviously limited to 1.5 Gbps, and whatever the PCI bus transfer speed is), however, I don't boot from it.

THAT'S WHAT IM SAYING.

but so far the board doesnt want to recognize the SATA2 drive, an IDE drive with a SATA converter, it reads fine and the SATA2 drive on a USB drive reader, reads fine

Most SATA2 drives have a jumper will force it to SATA1 mode. I have had to use it on several WD drives before where the controler had problems with the driver in SATA2 mode.

That's my experience as well and I've seen them on WD drives. My Fujitsu drives though would require a firmware config which has to be done from a windows machine.

As far as any SATA1 driver being able to work with a SATA2 driver, it is more than speed. There is protocol compatibility as well. While these protocols are designed to be able to be backward compatible it doesn't always work out.

electrohacker, have you also tried the BIOS settings? On R5.5 I found satisfaction using AHCI mode as opposed to SATA.

I'm guessing its jumpers 5 and 6 which says "enables 1.5GB PHY"

WD if you're reading along, MAKES THIS MORE CLEAR RETARDS
